The people who make frequent international calls from the mobile phones are well aware of the fact that these calls are very expensive.  The international calls made through the cell phones are charged extra in the form of various rates. These extra charges are other than the charges for the minutes and are usually more than a dollar per minute. The extra charges depend on the countries that people are trying to call. It is a relief if the people find it at an early stage and do not have learn about it in a hard way.

The use of landline phones gives you the facility of choosing your own long distance carrier for the international calls that you make. To do so, you simply have to dial a “10-10” code. The code is used as “10-10” only in the marketing materials. In reality, the code is 101XXXX. The XXXX used in this code is the code that is assigned to a particular carrier. You can choose the desired carrier by choosing the specific code. The “10-10” code was used in earlier days when there were only 999 carriers for the long distance calls. The actual code then was 1010XXX. It is because of this earlier code that it is known as the “10-10” code even today.  The code, however, does not work with the cell phones. In such a case, you are usually stuck. You are required to pay the charges that are demanded by the mobile service provider unless you are able to find and use some other methods of dialing around their network.

To be able to use a typical calling card for international calls, you are required to first dial the access number, then enter the PIN, and then finally dial the international number. Today, there are many calling cards available that offer pinless dialing. To use this facility, you are required to register the number that you want to dial. So whenever you call the access number, they instantly know about you and they will allow you to directly dial the international number. You do not have to enter any PIN to make an international call. But nobody wants to dial numerous numbers every time they make an international call.

One of the ways to get rid of this problem is to store the access number in the address book. In case there are many international numbers in your calling list, you can store all these numbers with preceded by the access number. Between the access number and the international number, there must be enough blank spaces to allow the network to recognize you before the network prompts for the international number.

In this case, you will be charged for the minutes for dialing the access number as per the cell phone plan that you are using. Other than this, you will be charged for the international call as per the rate provided to you by the calling card. For example, if you have opted for a T-mobile plan with “My Faves”, you will be allowed to add access numbers to the list of your international numbers and will be able to enjoy unlimited minutes of international calls. There is a similar process for Verizonwireless with the plan “Friends and Family”. Both the plans offer “anytime” minutes.
